How To Be Perfect

  • Metropolitan Community Church of Greater St. Louis 7423 Michigan Avenue St. Louis, MO, 63111 United States (map)

A collaboration class with House of Figs

Most people think of themselves as “good,” but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad”—especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia and they have guidance for us. Join us as we discuss How to Be Perfect which explains with wit and humor ethical questions and complex moral issues. So at the end of this study we will be perfect, and all our friends will be jealous. OK, not quite. Instead, we’ll gain fresh, funny, inspiring wisdom on the toughest issues we face every day.

In this class, we will explore everyday questions that allow us to exercise our morality: Should we shop at Amazon? I’m Gay… Can I eat chicken from that one place? Should I lie to my friend and tell her I like her ugly shirt? and more.

We will watch an episode of The Good Place, discuss a chapter or two of the book (or delightful audiobook) How to be Perfect, talk about philosophy, and debate questions that don’t have a “right” answer but certainly impact our way of being.

This class is one that you can drop in and out of depending on what’s happening in your life this summer. You can also participate onsite or on Zoom. So join us for a fun approach to moral thinking. Please pick up a copy of How to be Perfect and read the introduction and Chapter 1 before the first class. Let us know if you need a scholarship for your book or audiobook.
